They say you are what you eat, but I don't remember eating mYsELF
The characters weren't great, I think the only one I honestly cared slightly about was the droid because he actually had a bit of a personality. It was easily the biggest downfall of the movie for me to be honest, and it's sad because out of any of the SW movies, you really needed to care a lot about the characters in this one for it to be effective. I don't know if it was the acting or whatever but I feel like if they nailed this aspect, this would have easily been one of the best in the franchise.

It was the lack of any back story for either of them. You don't really care about the girl, or her father, because the first thing you see is Storm Troopers walking from REALLY far away to get to the farm, and him telling them to go hide. Nothing nice or sweet with bonding time.

Same with the dude when he says he's been at this since he was 6.

She wasn't even that cute

I obviously know you're kidding, but yeah

I personally thought Rey was cuter in a nerdy sort of way.

There's no comparison really. I didn't think Jyn was that cute tbh, she has really noticeable front teeth that were slightly off putting for me.

They probably want you to buy the prequel novel to the film, and while I've heard it's good, you shouldn't need to read it

Any movie/game that requires you to read expanded lore to appreciate/understand the story entirely thrown at you, is a bad film/game. The story should be contained in the movie.

Signature goes here.
Both of them are pretty cute, but they each have glaring flaws; one being boring as sin and the other a total Mary Sue.

Rey is not a Mary Sue, let alone a "total" one.

Every fucking obstacle she faces is just an excuse to show how good at something she is.

That alone doesn't make her a Mary Sue.

I used to think the same way, until I rewatched Episode IV. Rey is just like Luke, she like him, is very intune with the Force. To a degree greater than your average Jedi and Sith. This could only lead to her being part of the Skywalker bloodline, which would make a lot of sense. Anakin and Luke both were child prodigies, and even when they had little to no training in the ways of the Force they had the potential to do amazing stuff. Rey is the same, although her abilities were awoken much earlier thanks to Anakin's lightsaber and Kylo, when he attempted to read her mind.

In regards to RLM, I can respect their opinion and understand if they don't like it, but their RO review really rubbed me the wrong way. It felt like they were just shitting all over anyone who enjoyed the film, and their definition of fanservice is waaaaaay too broad. Their vision of Star Wars is also unnecessarily orthodox.

I still like them and find them pretty funny, but I will be taking their reviews of franchise films with a grain of salt in the future. Their reviews of such films have become e tainted by an overriding sense of cynicism which wasn't as prominent before.

Best of The Worst and their reviews of independent films and non-franchise films are still great though.

Plinkett reviews yes but that was always a trait of those specific reviews; that was when Stoklasa let forth every ounce of cynicism in his body. Half in The Bag was always a little more upbeat.

i don't know, show me an example of an upbeat review they did

they all (especially jay the unpleasable jackass, pictured above) seem like huge cynics constantly from what i've seen

Jay actually seems pretty upbeat to me.

Again, it's just their reviews of franchise movies that tend to be super cynical now

I've taken it upon myself to rewatch the whole saga--I think it's been a year.

If nothing else, Rogue One did succeed in rekindling my interest in Star Wars.

It's really fucking annoying, the Canon articles tend to get neglected a lot too; they are updated infrequently despite the wealth of new info being introduced.
