Just finished A Dance With Dragons (Song of Ice and Fire)

Just finished the seventh (Or fifth, depending on your perspective) A Song of Ice and Fire novel, thus ending a series that took me the better part of a year to read (until Winds of Winter comes out). Overall, I really enjoyed the series, it's probably my favourite book series (But I haven't read that many series', mostly individual books) right now.

Any recommendations for books to read now?

All the Halo stuff (Minus Shadow of Intent, because I guess 343 doesn't like releasing their books in the UK), Star Wars Republic Commando, World War Z, the two Elder Scrolls novels and a bunch of other smaller scifi series that I don't know if anyone here would have heard of.

Yes. A Storm of Swords and Dance With Dragons were split into two books each because of their length.

You should look into some of the theories that have come up, they're really fucking in depth and some of them are probably true.

A seemingly generic (but actually detailed and unique) fantasy adventure with a very detailed system of magic and unbelievably good writing.

There are currently two books, with the last in the trilogy coming out next year.

I'll have a look into it. I'm planning on trying Fellowship of the Ring again at some point. I gave upon it before because I got bored reading it.

If you haven't already read them, I'd strongly recommend the Dune series.

Or maybe the Sharpe books, should it turn out that you like this series a lot I'd suggest Gaunt's Ghosts which can be described as Sharpe in Space without it implying it's a shitty scifi ripoff >_>

That's the problem. Everyone tries too hard to be realistic nowadays. Like, apparently he writes his sex scenes in grisly, stomach-churning detail so that there's no eroticism whatsoever. It's like, what the fuck? Why bother?

It just doesn't seem appealing to me whatsoever, like Lord of the Rings.

I agree wholeheartedly, but I'd say ASOIF isn't exactly high fantasy.
You can easily forget that it's set in a world with magic and the like, because it very rarely actually appears.

A lot of the series is around the politics and 'real world' aspects to the world, with the odd bit of magic/dragons/Others placed in.

I'm not saying go out and read it mind you, the books are very long and you'd probably have an embolism from half of the goings on (or going at it to be precise) but yeah, it's not high fantasy really.

It's not really "nowadays" considering the series started in the 90's IIRC, but I agree. I just think it's a bit silly to complain about realism in a fantasy book when it's known for it's realism.

My problem with the series is that Martin is incapable of efficiency. He'll go on and on about a useless character and then kill him after pages of backstory. It's pointless.

I also don't enjoy fiction all that much, but w/e.

No...There's almost no sex in the books whatsoever, and none of it is grisly.
