I've been trying to read some of the better stories before digging into random stuff.Anything written and painted by Alex Ross, particularly Marvels and Kingdom Come. The man gets what superheroes are about, and has them doing more than just punching bad guys. Also, his art is amazing.Marvel has some good side stories going on right now, like Old Man Logan, The Unworthy Thor, Thanos and Venom. You won't need to know what Marvel's been shitting out in their mainline books to get into them.Born Again is a fantastic Daredevil story, one of Frank Miller's few that didn't suck.DC has been killing it with Rebirth, as long as you've read Convergence and have basic knowledge of DC's history.Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and Joker are interesting looks at the characters in question. Red Son and American Alien are good starting points if you want to get into Superman.Sandman and Watchmen, of course, but also look out for Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing. In general side stories tend to be much better than series bogged down by continuity.
