Is horse / dog racing, animal abuse?

The way I see it is, if an animal cannot consent to some activity they are involved in - its borderline abuse and most likely cruel.

Races - yeah, cruel.
Circus - abuse and cruel. Captivity and forced to do things through fear.
Zoo - hard to say. Animals just chill but they are in captivity. I'm not sure about this one.

What do you think?

the culture surrounding the breeding of racing animals is a little suspect, but racing itself isn't abuse unless an owner s trying to race an injured horse or doping it or something.

The racing itself isn't the problem, it's that racing falls under the whole "pure standard breed" umbrella of fucked up things. When somebody decides to participate in dog racing (as a viewer or owner), by extension they're contributing to an abusive field.

Most racing dogs are specifically bred to *want* to run. Greyhounds, as a standout example. Greyhounds are also very sad, anxiety-ridden animals that shouldn't be bred anymore.

Still Seems like they are creating a problem. We got these races going on, but we need faster animals. So they go ahead and breed faster and faster dogs.
No races, no breeding. Also stop buying pugs FFS. They need to die off for their own sake.

Stop buying purebreds, period. Intentionally limiting genetic diversity for ~`《a e s t h e t i c》'~ is horribly stupid and horribly awful. It leads to so many health and quality of life issues that it should straight up be considered animal abuse.

To even train an animal to obey a command is on some level a form of abuse due to pack mentality. It's more evident in dogs due to their heritage from wolves. In this case, the alpha is simply a human being who has proven themselves to be the dog's master. You don't achieve that status without being harsh in some fashion. I think it counts as abuse when it's taken a step further for profit or entertainment. So, yes.

If I'm being frank here, lovecraft sounds like a pretentious prick in that quotation. If I'm wrong, it's too bad he's not around to explain why I've known plenty of dogs that'll pester you to play fetch on their own accord or just look at you like a stump on some days when they don't feel like playing anything. Unless the only viable explanation is that lovecraft only ever met dumb dogs in his life.
