Don't know why everyone is having a go at Apple. The only reason they know they can get away with charging these prices is because of their dumbass consumers and their inertia. Apple know they're a brand amongst ditsy hipster students, which is where 50% of the price comes from.

Just because clock speed isn't a super important factor doesn't mean that it still doesn't play a role in the performance of a processor

Cause 1.2 GHz is shit, like really shit. The thing is only dual core as well IIRC, if it was quad or more I could maybe understand that low clock speed.

I'm pretty sure it's more than enough for anything that's not video games.

If you read the whole article, there's a whole bunch of advancements that make CPUs a lot more efficient than they used to be. They also use a lot less power than their predecessors for a lot faster performance. And the frequency is not set in stone--these particular CPUs can go up to or past 2GHz when needed.

Some CPUs have a lower clockspeed for a variety of reasons.
This server chip has six cores and a lower clockspeed because it's aimed at ordering tasks with precision and efficiency rather than running highly intensive ones.
The Core M series are aimed at ultrathin laptops, notebooks, and tablets because they don't produce much heat at all.
