They say it's alt prevention, but that's really too stupid to be the actual reason. They just hate people who don't fork out $$ now, apparently, never mind if you've played/own any/all of their other games, even if you're on the staff.

It's because they want to get rid of the people who don't want to follow them. Even if you're a lifelong Bungie fan they don't want anything to do with you.
They've slowly been weeding out non-Destiny players for like a year or so now. At first they stopped non-Destiny players posting in #Feedback and #Destiny. Then they locked everyone out of their account if they signed up using Facebook or Gmail, instead of XBL or PSN.
Now they've taken the final step to cut off non-Destiny players.

There came a time when Achronos, DeeJ and whoever else located at BUNGiE HQ couldn't stand hearing the word Halo on their forums again so decided it's time to purge us reachtards once and for all.

Might as well also get rid of the Halo avatars and stats?

Actually, that was to deter the trolling of a member known as Oh GodLike One, he did a very good job at it: posting in a highly intelligent and sophisticated manner.
