There's 5 seasons and the 6th is only on Netflix I think. I didn't bother with the 6th season. The ending of season 5 was satisfying, in my opinion.

I would be insanely confused reading that book if I hadn't seen TCW first, considering it's a novelization of the remaining story reels from season six.

Everything in Dark Disciple is directly the result of events in TCW.

You can skip around with TCW, there are quite a few really dumb episodes. There are also some pretty good ones, though. In particular I would recommend the Season 4 Umbara arc.
