I'm confused why he was the bad guy. All he did was look out for his business; his employees agreed to what they got paid likely when they started, so it's their own fault for signing into a contract like that.

There wasn't a minimum wage in the Victorian London. Again, they shouldn't have signed on to work with a guy who is known to be an arse, nor should they have accepted pay that was unacceptable.

I have no sympathy for them.
