If you could mod movies like you could mod games

They already do that. I've got some VHS copies where the Original Star Wars trilogy got some CGI makeovers (e.g. Adding Hutt to a few scenes).
Not a mod because George Lucas himself wanted those added in for the special edition. That's more like a patch.
what about games that endorse modders

What about them?

If my best friend wanted everyone to piss on his carpet, that's certainly his right, but that doesn't mean I'm participating.

if its his right and you don't have to participate would you think its wrong for him to allow people that freedom

And would you say it would be a more accurate parallel if it wasn't his own carpet, but a copy of that carpet he gave you, in which his own is untouched

Games often have settings or such so the player can choose how they want to play the game, its a flexibility the developer gives the user

Would you not say that a game built on a platform designed to be mod friendly with a creator that invites people to develop their own content is the same flexibility, and is modding technically wrong if the creator knowingly allows modification on a copy of their product that doesn't affect their own

Modding is closer to getting a Lego kit and not following the manual than it is to editing a movie and reselling it.

I never said anything about reselling.

It's not wrong for him to allow people that freedom--it's just stupid, and I don't understand why you'd want that.

That would be a more accurate parallel, but it fails to establish that just because you have your own personal copy of the artwork doesn't mean that you can't desecrate it.

Modding isn't wrong; it's just dumb. That's always been my opinion. Unless a developer is releasing a knowingly unfinished game that they know will be fixed by the modding community--that actually is wrong, and like I said, if you like mods, you indirectly support shady business practices like that.

if thats how you feel i have nothing to say

on another note a lot of people began learning how to make games or assets starting from modding

instead of making a game from scratch they can focus on the specific parts of a game they want to rebuild, and it becomes a learning experience for them

sure you can download unity and learn from nothing but this is another avenue of self education thats driven by the desire to create more than anything else

making an entire game is a huge undertaking, its understandable people might want to build their knowledge piece by piece rather than being thrown into doing the deep such as programming the backend and making sure every aspect of the game works with each other

I wouldn't.

Movies like The Room shouldn't be messed with or modified in any way. Its a masterpiece. Perfect as is.
