Ah yes, because other countries with just as many depressed and mentally ill people (the US does not have a monopoly on the sick and violently twisted, rates of mental illness and depression are similar in just about all Western nations), with just as lacking mental health care programs (for example, a German friend of mine with severe depression has been on a waiting list to be appointed a therapist for almost half a year now), with the same amount of easy exposure to violent and sexual media for both children and adults alike (everything shown on US TV and the internet, we get here just the same), with the media covering everything in great depth just the same (constant coverage of large events, live updates, mentioning the names and kill counts of mass killings...) have the same problem with mass shootings and gun violence, right? No. We both know that they don't. To deny that easy access to firearms is a major risk factor for mass shootings and gun violence is about as uninformed as claiming that the presence of large bodies of water (such as pools, seas or lakes) is no risk factor for people drowning, but that the higher rates of deaths by drowning in those areas are actually all to blame on media glorification of swimming. Guns are not the only factor in these problems, but to deny that they're not a major one is really pretty delusional.
You get used to it, but it is a little disappointing. I don't claim to know it all and enjoying being challenged on these kinds of things, so it can be nice to actually have a proper discussion on politics.
All sarcastic remarks aside, the only thing I agree on is for more mental health background checks when purchasing a gun. That is as far as I will go to breaking the 2nd Amendment but in this day and age I guess adding stricter background checks would make sense. It would be a good start to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.
