i say yes

one of my weeb friends is arguing that i can't have an opinion until i watch the entire show

which seems a little bit silly to me

I'd say watching an entire season and using that to enjoy it is entirely fair. By that point, they should have set up all the major characters and plot points that it will rely on for the majority of the show. If you're not interested by then, then either the showrunners or whatever have done a bad job of hooking you on it. It's a logic that extends to all shows, not just anime.

Like, you wouldn't expect someone to have to watch all sixty hours of gameof thrones or however long of the Walking Dead before they're allowed to have an opinion on it. Likewise, if a game has failed to grab your interest by the time it's introduced all of it's main mechanics, then you've probably got good ground to say you don't like it. Unless you should have to spend 40+ hours playing Fallout New Vegas and doing every side quest, every map location and such before being allowed to say it's bad.

Then again I stopped watching house of cards like, 15 minutes in because kevin spacey started talking to me and I don't like that. Maybe I'm just strange.

i'd say if you wanted to write a review, you'd have to watch at least one full season

if you're just watching it for your own entertainment, then yeah, that would be excessive

If it doesn't feel right, just bail. anime isn't too different from other forms of media, if you don't like it don't try it. maybe another one would be more of your fancy, as it's important to remember that not all anime are similar.

One season should be plenty unless you're dealing with shonen like Naruto or One Piece with 700+ episodes.

A lot of animes are just a single season and then a few OVAs anyway.

I think of the 1st episode as like a introduction paragraph of a story. It has make you want to read on.

Couple of episodes ought to do it, the ones that I drop tend to be like episode 3/4 by the time i'm done with it.

There is no way in hell i'd sit through a season of something I wasn't enjoying.

I sat through all of wolf's rain and fucking hated it.

Then the last two episodes totally saved the show.

If I had to wait till the second season I'd have probably skipped it.
