This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
Boku no Pico

But nah, if you wanna try the least anime anime I've seen in a long time, check out 91 Days. It was fairly recent. Good ol' Chicago style mafia story.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
Don't fall for the Jojo memes, that anime will turn you gay. (speaking from experience)

Literally what the fuck.

I mean it's pretty standard stuff
The cat thing is sent back in time to help the kid not become a loser and together they go on adventures

If you don't like that, Urusei Yatsura is really funny and cute
A lot of waifu bait in this one tho

If you're apprehensive about committing to a full series, the Studio Ghibli movies are god-tier and are the length of an average film.

I'm seconding the suggestions of Black Lagoon and Baccano and I'll throw Cowboy Bebop in there as it's great for beginners

Black Lagoon is about pirates in the South China Sea in the late 90s/early 2000s. It's kind of like the anime equivalent of a Tarantino film, there's lots of gun porn and foul mouthed ruffian characters with a bit of nihilism and cultural criticism thrown in.

Baccano is about a group of immortals/people who come into contact with these immortals in early 20th century America. The anime version has that Pulp Fiction style narrative where scenes don't appear in the order they actually happen within the timeline.

Cowboy Bebop is about a crew of bounty hunters who travel around the Milky Way in the future. It deals with themes of existential ennui & nihilism, among others. It's got a great bluesy/jazzy soundtrack (so does Baccano but Yoko Kanno just added a special something to Cowboy Bebop) and some great fight choreography. Lots of cool gun-fu.

Also that show Hunter x Hunter is REALLY good but it's pretty long so I wouldn't recommend it for someone who's just trying to test the waters of chinese childrens' cartoons.

Yeah, but it kind of looks like it's made for 4 year olds. Is that just the art style?
It IS an anime made for children.

I don't know since I watched it as a kid myself
But it is really light hearted and whimsical so if that's something you're into, it's good

I'd rather do an actual series. I've just found myself wanting something short to watch when I have nothing to do, so that's why I'd like a show.
Very well, but do consider watching some of their movies. They don't share a lot of the infamous tropes associated with anime, so even if you don't like the weebshit you try you might like them.

I have one that doesn't follow your typical fan service tier shit.

Baccano!

If you like the Mob and the 30's era stuff, watch this anime, and watch it in dub for the accents. I think you'd really enjoy it. I sure did.

It's only about 15 episodes too, so it's nothing seriously long. It's got action, comedy, and one of the characters even gets the BABE at the end of it all.

While I too love Baccano!, I realized something about it and it's ilk while watching 91 Days mostly because the later doesn't do this.
Why does almost every gangster/mafia anime end up turning in to some kind of supernatural thriller anywhere from half way to three quarters way through the series?

Cowboy bebop is the only acceptable answer. Short, to the point, and a fantastic story.

Plus space cowboys.

So far, it seems to be either Baccano or Cowboy Bebop.

I'm going to bed now, so we'll see what it ends up being tomorrow.
Please for the sake of all that is holy, if you watch one, you have to watch the other. Both are amazing pieces of work. Cowboy Bebop was the anime that showed dubs can actually be good if you put effort and talent behind them.

Baccano just has an amazing cast, story, setting, and music.

How similar is Baccano's anime to its manga?
it's based on LNs not manga (though there is manga material). i havent read the LNs but as far as i know the story is pretty much the same except in the LNs the story is told normally from beginning to end as opposed to the disjointed way the anime presents it
