It's because dogs don't need to be good characters for us to like them. We automatically associate it with innocence, loyalty and unconditional love.

Whereas all the characters in that film were pretty bland. You don't have to write a dog's character. Granted, they did handle that scene really, really well.

German Shepherd's and Huskies are two of my favorite dogs.

Enig pointed out that Marley and Me had an even worse scene, and he's right. They show him slowly closing his eyes and then it fucking flashes back to him being a puppy and your heart just rips in half.

Dammit, I almost feel myself tearing up right now thinking about it.
