So I want to share an article from a site with three friends, and not just the URL. How do I do that? If I just CRTL+V into the update bar will it show more than just the URL text?

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
When you put the link URL into a status, it will show a thumbnail of a picture from the article if there is one.

From there, whoever clicks it will be taken to that article on whatever site its from.

It will if you let it load. Then you can just backspace the URL. That's what I do.
