Clubs, intramural sports, and religious groups are great. Look online for your college's clubs and activities and I'm sure you'll find something. If you're not athletic enough for sports or just aren't interested, try things like casual running clubs, spin classes, yoga, or martial arts. I met a lot of great people in a jiu jitsu club during my time in college. Frats aren't a bad option either, just look for technical degree frats or just general non-bro frats.

If your roommate is really an issue, talk to the manager of your dorm and see about moving. They're usually pretty accommodating.

My degree was in industrial engineering, which is engineering with a heavy focus on statistics. I don't really know how your program works, but getting a strong foundation is important because there are many different techniques for analysis and hypothesis testing, but they're all variations of a few different techniques you'll learn early on.

I have a hard time initiating conversation. I don't have an issue with eye contact and I don't stare at the ground when I walk or anything like that.

I mean, I've only taken one stats course (ap stats) so far, and I loved it. I genuinely understood everything that was taught to me, and I think it's all interesting as fuck. I think I have about as good a foundation as any other freshman could.

If not, say hello to the other folks in your lectures for the first few weeks. I was in a similar situation where I knew no-one on my course, and most of my housemates were foreign which took time to settle out. Now I'm sharing a house next year with three coursemates and a my past housemate.

Many people will be in the same situation for the first few weeks, so many will be opening out to others a lot more, so it's worth... taking advantage of...? You know what I mean.

Seriously, look into joining a fraternity. Don't listen to any of these NEETs who have no idea what they're talking about, and the extent of their knowledge of fraternities comes from bad publicity of some bad apples. You're attending UF, right? I'm 100% certain that they have a fraternity for guys just like you, and there are plenty others filled with cool people. Even participating in Rush Week and showing up to the events is better than not trying it out at all.
