Most microwaves don't function until you close the door, if he can do what you say, I think he already has superpowers and can phase through objects.

in some old models the clips in the door push against a switch that allow it to function so if you find something to push against that switch you can leave the door open and still have it function. Most new microwaves however have smarter safety mechanisms.

I've broken two microwaves like that. Sure, it's nothing spectacular but it won't heat up anything to an acceptable degree anymore.

Last time I left a spoon in for a few minutes and afterwards it would just make things barely lukewarm.
