Art is subjective so there's really no point trying to force you to like something, but I sincerely believe it stands up to modern film and excels in writing and cinematography in such a way that few modern films even attempt. Charles Foster Kane is a fantastic character with more complexity than 90% of male protagonists today. Welles basically invented the modern anti-hero, and pulls it off better than most.

It's not the best movie ever, but it's a very respectable one.

I pretty much won't even bother with a movie if it's past the '60s and that's usually pushing it. There's just been too many significant improvements in acting and methods of directing to really get much enjoyment out of them. It'd be like trying to explain to a kid why Goldeneye is a master piece when he has modern shooters.

I dunno man, I catch a lot of 40's and 50's movies on TCM throughout the day, and some of them are pretty good flicks. They just have some kind of weird charm to them.

Why is it good?

i think it's less about the film being good and more about the techniques employed in making the film being extremely influential, like the use of cinematography and editing to set the mood and shit like that. things that are nothing special these days but back in the day were pretty big.

It's the basis of modern cinematography. It-- on its own-- isn't an outstanding movie, but it revolutionized the technical side of film.

It's also why the whole "the new Citizen Kane" comparisons that get thrown around occasionally always fall flat: they use it to just mean "this movie/game is really good", but it offers nothing new and groundbreaking from technical standpoints.

12 Angry Men is better.
