"More than what it appears on the surface."
Adam Sandler's Pixels

Cheap nostalgia-bait cash-in with unlikable, chauvinistic, and slobbish characters?

Or a social commentary depicting a dystopic vision where gaming, as a global phenomenon, is destroying the lives of millions?

>I don't want to give my reason why because then he could poke holes in it.
You would poke holes in it regardless, because you're so offended at the notion that your precious Star Wars isn't the most original thing in the world.

Darkseid is a supervillain bent on conquering galaxies. A two second Google search would've told you that.
Dr. Doom is another villain whose design was pretty much one of the main inspirations for Darth Vader's design.

This excerpt explains the similarities between the Winter Soldier and Darth Vader reasonably well.
Quote
Vader and Bucky are both only pawns in the schemes of greater players, though they ended up in their respective situations through very different means. Although he was manipulated to a degree by the Emperor, Anakin became Darth Vader of his own volition. In contrast, Bucky had no say in becoming the Winter Soldier. He was brainwashed and transformed into a mindless assassin, losing all memories of his former life. He’s confused when Steve calls him by name (“Who the hell is Bucky?”), echoing Vader’s reaction to Luke referring to him as Anakin (“That name no longer has any meaning for me!”). Both Vader and Bucky are “more machine now than man,” which refers to more than just their mechanical limbs.

>i'm too afraid to do research on my own for fear of discovering that my beloved darth vader is actually unoriginal as fuck

In 2005 the original Bucky was brought back from supposed death as the villainous assassin Winter Soldier, and later briefly assumed the role of Captain America when Steve Rogers was presumed to be dead.

Kirby modelled Darkseid's character on that of Adolf Hitler and the world of Apokolips on Nazi Germany. Like Hitler, Darkseid is a jackboot-wearing megalomaniac and warmonger who, in fascist style, sees every citizen as an extension of the state and himself.

So Vader predates winter soldier and Darkseid is literally Hitler.

Can't be the latter since there's nothing to back up that statement.

Relatability is about as shallow as you can get, by the way. It's the most safe form of film-making there is. Not that there's anything wrong with that--it's the easiest way to make an entertaining movie. But it isn't deep.

If you're able to take something away from a movie that you CAN'T relate to, or can only relate to in abstract ways?

That's deep.

Because I can totally relate to the plight of Star Wars characters without having it be abstract? Or take from it without relating to it?

Offtopic, but that's also helping further my points with Das on how Deep Eva is.

Eva isn't even deep, you faggot. It's freshman psych meets intro to religious symbolism in art.

By "abstract," I mean "abstract."

Not, "I can relate to Luke Skywalker despite not being a magical swordsman or star pilot."

I wasn't looking a great deal into the characterization, to be honest.

You should give it another view and think about the theme of wanton violence paired with our own increasing ignorance and apathy towards one another.

Seeing an emotional struggle from a character that at the time of watching (My first viewings of Episode V and VI) I thought was just a cold, unemotional, machine without any regard for the lives of others.

What did you take away from it?

That's not a takeaway. You're just describing what happened.

Did it change your life? Did you learn anything? Did you become a better person?

Well when I think about somebody who I think might be a rotten bitch or a fucking douche bag, seeing that helped me wonder what would it take in their lives to reach a level of caring about how I feel.

There is only one theme in all of storytelling.

'Who am I?'

If you fail to utilize this well, then your story is a failure, and it will be either ignored or forgotten.

Sometimes the depth is in finding a new way to convey this theme, but the depth always stems from it.
