The sun sets pretty much at 5 pm at it's shortest time though

I don't understnad how daylight savings works but I know it is important. It is scary getting dark at half 4 o'clock in the afternoon. It makes me feel sleepy when just 2 months ago I would normally be outside playing.

Why does nature make this happen?
