OT: The definition of synthetic is something along the lines of 'made through a chemical process outside of natural processes', so he's not wrong. To me, picking out parents is more controversial than genetically modifying an existing embryo. Say for example you take embryos and filter out disorders and other undesirable medical traits; compared to picking out a sperm and ovum from donors who possess desirable traits (be it medical, athletic, or otherwise), the former is much more defensible than the latter.

Well your topic is IVF, and I'm contrasting that to the current debate around genetic modification in embryos to eliminate disorders or potentially make custom phenotypes, agreeing that IVF is a selfish route compared to adoption.
