Growing up our household wasn't the wealthiest. Talking to my parents now at times were living paycheck to paycheck. I've always wanted a dog as a pet and my parent knew that. However dogs cost a decent amount of money per month and it was impossible due to our budget.

Depending on the critter and the relationship with said critter, pretty decent. I've got this cat that I found as a stray after the first few weeks I was in this province. Heard something meowing out in the field and went to go find it. Skinny little starving cat was hobbling along on two broken back legs. So I picked her up and that was that.

All she wants to do all day long is sit in my lap and pur. Which is nice on some days and some nights where I get really down because that cat is always there. Follows me everywhere and makes a fuss if I'm gone too long.

With a good dog, it's the same thing except multiplied a bit farther since you can travel with them and stuff like that.
