they can recognize other cats, but im not sure they have a functional idea of "catness" or "dogness"

I pretty sure that when most cats see another cat, they at least know that they are both the same thing, essentially. IE: A mother cat knows its young are the same thing as it.

I don't think a cat knows on an intellectual level, however, what a 'cat' is and how we humans define them.
