I'm interested in Warhammer 40k...

There's like two or three wikis, several novels, plus rulebooks.

I'd recommend you start reading the TV Tropes article on Warhammer 40,000, since it gives you an idea of not just the lore, but also the community that surrounds it. Also, it's fun to read.

The system as in the tabletop game?
It's pretty standard as far as those go, you have soldiers that shoot or stab each other and vehicles. Then you have special units that do something a bit different, heroes/commanders and the like. You build an army, paint it, then pick out the force for the battle you are gonna play (points system for weighing up the value of armies/units) and play with the rulebooks and codices to hand.

Depends a bit, if you have a hobby store nearby they usually have games you can play with ready made models and the like.

Honestly though, you are better off sticking with the books/video games of the franchise.
The models are obscenely expensive, even moreso if you don't live in the UK, the game is badly balanced and they've been going down the 'how2makemoremoney' route in terms of game design.

It's good fun though.

Just play Dawn of War or something to get invested in the looks/factions of it.

If you have to start with a faction you want to learn about via wiki or something, learn about the Imperium of Man since they're the most prominent.

Someone tried to teach me about the Eldar first (space elves). I've had a small dislike for it ever since.
