Basically, it started with Zoe getting a text-based game onto steam called Depression Quest. A lot of people felt it didn't deserve the media attention it was getting because it wasn't really a game and was overshadowing other projects seen as more worthy.

Zoe also shut down a game jam run by a company called The Fine Young Capitalists, whose goal was to get women who lacked the ability to develop their own games to pitch their ideas. Zoe thought this was misogynistic since it implied woman can't develop games on their own, and got a following of people to attack TFYC.

Then Zoe's ex boyfriend claimed that Zoe was sleeping with the journalists and developers who were promoting her Depression Quest game.

People didn't like these thigns, and Zoe came under fire. Around this time Zoe claimed to be targeted with doxxings and death threats specifically from a site called Wizardchan, however Wizardchan denied it and there is evidence suggesting that Zoe may have fabricated the whole thing in order to gain support in order to sweep her actions under the rug (don't take my word for it, but there were many holes in her story).

Then, many sites like reddit started censoring and banning anyone who spoke out against anything to do with the above. In the wake of the accusations of misogyny, members of 4chan's /v/ reached out to The Fine Young Capitalists and donated several thousand dollars to their reestablished women's game jam. TFYC then became the target of threats and doxxings from supporters of Zoe.

The focus then turned away from Zoe and towards gaming journalism sites, who were now seen as corrupt and focused on pushing agendas rather than reporting. It didn't help that those sites began publishing articles attacking gamers and accusing the whole industry of being misogynistic. That's pretty much where it is now.

TL;DR: Zoe Quinn allegedly did some very awful things, and when gamers tried to speak out about it the media began censoring them and labeled them as misogynistic. Gamergate is now mainly focused on bias in the media, but a lot of sites including cracked seem to think it's about attacking Zoe for being a woman.
