"okay, so here is how race "works" (disclaimer: I am not perfect, just the closest thing to it)
"white" = state of privilege contingent not just on skin colour but on education, speaking the dominant language, colonialism, etc
"whiteness" = maximum level of access to privileges associated with being a member of the dominant race
race = A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT, not biological, that takes into account skin colour, language, education, geography, colonialism, etc
"proximity to whiteness" = components of an individual's identity that grant them or deny them privileges associated with whiteness
while it is impossible for a non-white person to have every privilege of whiteness, they may have increased proximity to whiteness
e.g. because I speak english natively, am a lighter brown, am educated, live in a "first world" country, I have proximity to whiteness
black/white = not a binary but rather two constructs set in opposition, with blackness as oppressed state and whiteness as privileged state
important to note that both black(-as-monolith) and white are constructs created by the dominant class
"black" = construct that covers a variety of dark-skinned and sometimes somewhat lighter-skinned people with varying access to privilege
black identities run the gamut from native peoples of dominican republic etc to diaspora africans to african americans to many others
to say that all black people have the same access to white privilege is to ignore colourism, misogynoir, transmisogynoir, etc
"colourism" = construct that props up anti-blackness by positioning black identities with closer proximity to whiteness as more desirable
to conclude: it's not as simple as white/non-white when whiteness is not an all-or-nothing proposition but a spectrum of varying access"
