how do you choose between "lol", "lmao", and "rofl"

i don't use acronyms, often

so this kinda confuses me

from what i can tell, there's sort of an innate hierarchy going on where "lmao" is more intense than "lol"
but "LOL" in all caps can also be an intensifier

and what's a more intense expression of laughter--"lmao" or "rofl" or "LOL"?
how are you supposed to choose

do you even put that much thought into it, or is it all just arbitrary and you just pick whatever

I never use those on here. I imagine I'd use 'lol' to say something's funny, though I didn't actually laugh, 'lmao' for something I laughed at, and rofl for something obscenely funny, which would never happen on this site.
