I disagree. I feel like public schools should teach basic things related to finance at the latter part of high school since you're almost an adult at that point.

It did, but Econ and finance are two different things.

I learned taxes and basic investment information in my high school econ class.

Okay. But a class dedicated to personal finance would still be better. It leaves little room for fluctuation in the curriculum. I mean yeah an econ class may or may not touch on it, but you might as well get the full details of finance so you'll know how to challenge them in life. But I mean, I guess what we're doing now is still working.

I'm a financially stable adult that learned some stuff in econ, but I wouldn't even know what kind of things to include in that class, and I know with near certainty that most of it would go in one ear and out the other because it's not relevant. There's so much other information to be learned in high school that it's really not necessary to include life lessons which are learned through experience, especially when we have access to so much information these days.

I thoroughly remember filling out tax forms for a test in one of my mandatory high school classes, as well as understanding insurance terminology, IRA's, and demonstrating a moderate understanding of financial planning. Can't say I remember anything about retirement from it though.

last year my county actually made it a requirement for high school students to take at least one finance-oriented class before they graduate. it's astounding to see the amount of young adults that have absolutely no financial knowledge whatsoever.

So the logic here is essentially let's not include a practical class in school since it can be learned through life lessons, which is not standardized at all for everyone. High school is a four year endeavor, you can fit a semester of finance, bro.
