besides, there's no reason i can't convert the things i do in my spare time, like writing all the reviews i write for random stuff, into something i could turn into a makeshift career soon—i'm still gathering material for my eventual dark souls review, and after that, i have a bigger project in mind that may or may not involve video, and i'm learning vegas pro for that and it's been going slow, but since basic video editing comes naturally to me anyway, so it won't be too long before i can get that off the ground

if i weren't in college right now, though, i'd probably already be on youtube with 5,000 subscribers—and i'm just the kind of person who likes to whinge about what could've been

others don't see a point, i view it as a form of release

Well its subjective to where you live. I dunno about the US but the size of the Hex (College/Uni loans) debts are astronomical here in Australia and you're basically in debt for half of your working life.

Plus it worked for me, but thats not to say its the same for everyone.

There’s nothing subjective about retail. It’s one thing to say fuck college and take a trade just to make money, but to condemn a man to a life of working in retail is practically a prison sentence. I don’t say this because I look down on people who work retail jobs. But to willingly do it and say education is a complete waste of time is a grotesquely ignorant thing to say.

I said its subjective due to location, he might have a lot more opportunities due to location, so again (cause it was my opinion) education is probably a waste if you hate what you're doing and theres nothing for that person in that town. Also yes working basic retail shit is the fucking sticks but where I am now, I still have to work sure, but you get your staff to do the fucky jobs for you because thats their job and you do the office finances, make sure staff are meeting sale targets and deal with problem customers.

And that pay difference dude from being at the bottom to being a manager, you just dont see the opportunities that you can work yourself up to.

Anyway not much point ranting any further hes a bit too deep to drop it now. RIP my man.

You know regardless of what you do no one cares about you or your problems. Working for a corporation usually leaves you with more secure work (there are sketchy corps sure). But a degree 'can' mean jack shit if you dont end up actually finding work that fits your qualifications.

That's more or less what I was getting at. Establish connections. Start a blog. Contact (smaller) gaming sites and see if you can post your stuff there. Build a portfolio, become somewhat prominent in writing communities, specialize yourself in a certain area, take additional classes... You've got enough time for it and it's only going to become more difficult in the future. Start building for later, perhaps sometimes by doing things you don't really want to. You just have to put in the effort to put yourself out there and work for something in the future. I did the same thing with Quake and have got some really interesting things coming my way, for example.

Yeah tbh I kinda regret going to college at all. It was a waste of time and money (for me and for the field I went into). I'm just glad I never shelled out the big bucks for a prestigious university or whatever.

My brother is in a PhD program and OMG I don't even want to think of all the money it's costing him.
