Despicable me was a good movie when it was release.  Gru was an interesting main character.

Gru should gets the attention he deserves and is supposed to get. Way too long those shitty, overhyped minions overshadowed him but mostly his lesson in life. Gru is about change, about learning to love something. But those minions and their uneducated fart and bland jokes always overshadow those valuable lessons

You wake up, as if your eyes ever actually closed. The pavement is familiar, you've laid here for days. Weeks ago you saw all your twin brothers being bought for children with smiles on their faces, to be played with, to have a home, to be loved, even for a little while. You were bought as a joke. They were drunk and laughed at you, they took your tiny helpless plastic body out of the store and threw you on the ground. You were spared destruction by complete happenstance. You've had nothing to do for days. You don't speak, you don't blink, all you have is the lie of a smile, and a piercing shriek on the inside. You're not like the rest, you want to say. I was only born this way, i didn't choose what I am. it doesn't matter- they only see your putrid yellow skin, your sad overalls, your broken little eyes. They know what you represent and that's enough for them. You've never even seen Despicable Me. What is this that I am that they hate me for? you might wonder. It's a shame you'll never know that you're a little toy that could've brought some infant happiness. It's a shame that so shortly after you were created you were abandoned. It's a shame that your design is an affront to all that is decent and good in the world, and people use your face to push their horrific, shitty agendas, or embarrasingly attempt to make their grandkids smile. You were good enough for the youngest, but a travesty in the hands of adults. You await the sweet embrace of death, and only hope it comes soon. Dude, fuck minions.

Because kids think they're cool, so the marketing team started throwing them left and right.

Because they're considered cute, funny, and inoffensive--and therefore appeal to the largest number of people possible.
