It's a timer, you usually only get so long to play (Say 5 minutes), once it's your turn, the timer will go down until you press the timer for the other person's turn, stopping your timer and making theirs go down

Should clarify each person gets 5 minutes separate from the other person or however long the game is, which is why there's the timer
