"May suggest" and "intense current attachments" isn't exactly what's being talked about though. More likely those studies are talking about people who view their stuffed animal as a companion of sorts, the relationship specifically formed while growing up and never became something less. I doubt it's referring to someone who simply has a stuffed animal. Even so, it's only correlation at best.

The hotel chain Travelodge surveyed 6,000 Britons to learn more about Britain's fascination with the teddy bear after its staff tried to reunite more than 75,000 forgotten bears left behind in its 452 hotels in England -- and found many were not owned by children.

Furthermore:

Quote
One-in-10 single men surveyed in England admitted they hide their teddy bear when their girlfriend stayed over, while 14 percent of married men reported they hide their teddy bear when any family and friends came to visit.

This one in particular implies that they got the bear themselves as there would be no reason to hide one from family and friends if they gifted it to them.

There is literally nothing wrong with owning a plush toy.
