Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was pretty dope

I know, /capeshit, but I really enjoyed my time. The story was nice, and there was some pretty great character development, especially Rocket concerning his douchebaggery. There were a couple of questionable moments mainly from a comic book lore standpoint, and--while funny--I felt like there were too many jokey moments. Overall, enjoyable experience and didn't feel like I wasted my time ala Suicide Squad.

In all seriousness it was okay. I liked it more than the first, but then I've seen the first several times whereas I've only seen this once, and I don't want to pre-emptively give it a 10/10 like I did with Age of Ultron, then watch it again and be like"why did I like this so much the first time around?"

But I did find Ego (and the plot in general) to be a lot better written than the first. A lot of the jokes fell really flat though, and several were really drawn out - the one with the opening credits and the Bomb one both went on for too long, and I don't think I saw anyone in the screening actually laughing at them.

Hell, the only parts me and my friend found funny were the things that were unintentionally funny - not the actual humour.

I mean, I was expecting it to just be a complete rehash of the first based on the trailers, but I'm glad they actually did a good job of hiding what it actually was. In that respect, I did like that.

I'd definitely put it in the upper tier of Marvel films based on the one viewing I've had, but not anywhere close to Winter Soldier or Civil War. It was ok. I'm going to see it again with my parents at some point so I guess I'll see how a repeat viewing goes.

Yeah that Groot intro dancing was painfully long, but it'll make all the fans buy the Dancing Groot Funko Pop Mk. II.

And the bomb scene has the same problem as a lot of the jokes, where the characters are just loudly exclaiming how wacky and zany their current situation is.

I liked Ego and those ridiculously pompous gold people though.

I don't know if I will be able to stomach Baby Groot. He came across as really forced even in the trailers, and I expect in the film they milk him for all he's worth.

Eh he was a tad overblown, but I didn't feel exhausted by it.

It was very good. Really enjoyable movie. I thought the plot was more interesting and the characters got more development than the first. Pretty much the only thing that drags it down for me is some of the humor and the large majority of the failed jokes revolve around Baby Groot. Other than that I'd give it a solid 8.5 - 9 / 10

honestly one of the best parts about this movie was there wasnt a main villian

Kurt Russelhoff was definitely the best villain. I'd say the most forgettable to me was either Malekith or the first 2 Iron Man villains.

For sure. I loved the whole concept of prefacing Quill's father so much and the payoff being so satisfying (playing catch, being taught about the universal stuff). But there was also something off about him, even in the first scene something was a little weird. Just beautifully done.

So, I just saw this movie, and it was surprisingly good. My low expectations going in were thoroughly exceeded, and I'd even say it was a little better than the first (and I liked that one too). The themes of family resonated with me and the humor was top-notch, but there was probably one or two more dick jokes than I would've liked.

Also, this film is proof positive that you can have anti-natalist undertones and still make a fun-ass movie.

I liked this movie a lot, but was pretty disappointed with the generic sequel structure this film took, from expanding the team, redeeming previous villains, and the protagonist searching for his father, with that reveal being a lazy cliche itself. The character development boiled down to everybody just needing a hug. I worry that my enjoyment of the film from it's dozens of jokes and big spectacle is letting me forgive a pretty bad story and a really shitty climax.

After Doctor Strange's creative climax, watching two Celestials just have a dumb fist fight was a huge letdown.

I thought the whole point of this franchise was that it's a conglomeration of cliches (homages), kinda like Star Wars was. I saw the reveal coming within seconds of a particular character's debut, but I was still okay with it, because I didn't feel as though it was trying to be subtle in the first place, and I found myself compelled by the mystery of his underlying motivations.

Most character development in any series ever could boil down to them just needing a hug, so I don't think that's a fair criticism either. I also feel like you're underselling the climax a little--it had a bit more than what you described, and for what it offered, I thought it was passable.

It definitely had flaws, but I don't think you really nailed any of them down.

In some ways, yes, and when it actually does this intentionally, I enjoyed it. It subverted tropes throughout the first half of the film, from the opening scene with a huge fight that is ignored because who cares, they're the heroes and there's nothing at stake, just watch little Groot dance. Multiple times, sappy/cliche exposition would be halted mid-sentence by an irreverent joke, telling the audience that stuff really isn't important. The Sovereign are initially set up as the villains, but time and again are used as jokes, telling the audience, again, that the traditional narrative isn't what's important here: what's important are the characters and their interactions. I don't think anyone over the age of 16 would have fallen for the ploy that Ego was beneficent, and I don't think we were supposed to. But that's the point, about halfway through, where this subversion of tropes begins to end: everything starts embracing the tropes. Gamora/Nebula fight it out and become sisters; Rocket and Yondu argue and both accept they've buried emotional feelings under a facade of masculinity; Peter accepts his new family...okay, but we've seen all of that. Where's the turn? Oh, that's really as deep as we're going...didn't the movie just tell me these tropes are supposed to be a setup for actual character development? It feels like the writers set up a big ball of loose ends that they intended to leave frayed for comedic purposes -- why would we need it to end perfectly? -- but were compelled to do otherwise by Marvel standards.

And wow, that climax. With Peter having even a marginal grasp of being part-Celestial, I was expecting so much more than a glorified fistfight and a bomb killing one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Don't get me wrong, I think Ego was a fantastic villain for the MCU, and there were points in the fight that they tried going back to subversion (Rocket asking for tape and teaming up with Yondu, namely) but compared to recent Marvel works it's below par. Also, remember that I did really like the movie, and I think it's one of the best in the MCU. I tend to concentrate on the negatives during discourse, because nobody really needs to be told what the film did right. The problems weren't systemic, but the third act could have been much better.

I saw the film earlier. I'd give it a 9/10. Some of my thoughts:

- Baby Groot dance scene in the beginning went on far longer than it should have. Seeing this at the very beginning worried me to how the rest of the movie would turn out but thankfully Groot wasn't annoying or had anything similar to this anywhere else in the movie.

- The Gold people were useless and all of their scenes were dumb and really lame. them having a fleet that is piloted like a video game I thought was a cool concept but when you start to hear the arcadey sound effects it was just stupid.

- I really enjoyed how everyone in the squad all had their shining moments as well and none of them felt out of place.I think the best one was the encounter when Nebula finds Gamora on Ego's planet and they talk about their past for a little bit after they fight, good character development right there. Made you feel kinda bad for Nebula too for what Thanos has put her through. Drax and Rocket had great moments too, and Drax's dialogue throughout the whole movie was hilarious.

- Kurt Russell and Chris Pratt's chemistry in this movie was perfect. Kurt Russel really sold the dad role in this too cause he's just awesome.

- Last but not least, Yondu for me stole the whole f'n show. I wasn't expecting him to die because he was so cool and had badass moments.
