Uhm, okay. So, obviously a lot of symbolism here that I'm just not going to be able to dissect right now. Hopefully my brain churns out something this weekend that you might find interesting.

but what makes you like the video so much?
I like abstract, borderline-pretentious shit--but not to a level where it makes you want to stab your eyes out.

I love the visuals, the style, the cinematography--the symbolism, like you said. It's artsy, but cool artsy.

Does he ever explicitly state what he means by his lyrics? I know some artists do that, but others leave it open to interpretation.
Rarely. Trent's lyrics are often left vague on purpose--that way, it's easier to make it more "relatable" (and therefore more enjoyable) to a lot of people. Sure, a lot of his songs are deeply personal ("Hurt" being the most popular example), but in general, the lyrics are rarely the focal point of his music--so he keeps it safe and simply most of the time. He catches flak for that sometimes--some people think it's lazy writing, but eh.

Yeah, from what I heard it seems like a decent album. The quiet version of "Right Where It Belongs" is great.
That's the version everyone seems to like, but I actually prefer the studio version. The fuzzy guitar line and the crowd cheering at the end give me some serious chills, evertiem.

And Gone Girl's music was really good, which I think he created. I remember thinking that while watching the film and then finding out via twitter that he was involved. and i know he did the main theme of black ops 2, if you didn't know. it's actually quite good
Yeah. There's very little I don't know about his work, don't worry :P

I think it adds something to the music, personally. like, johnny cash's version of hurt conveys a very different message than reznor's. i think that gives his writing a little street cred, if that makes any sense lol

i feel weird now, idk. i really hope your interpretation of his lyrics don't alter my own -- i like them just the way they are, haha

the lyrics are a strong point of the album (inb4 Verb)

Mother I tried please believe me,
I'm doing the best that I can.
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through,
I'm ashamed of the person I am.

From Isolation

I never realized the lengths I'd have to go,
All the darkest corners of a sense I didn't know.
Just for one moment, I heard somebody call,
Looked beyond the day in hand, there's nothing there at all.
this is actually some pretty good shit

that's all right--as Aria likes to say, there's no such thing as a "bad" or "incorrect" takeaway when it comes to art

if your interpretation works for you, that's great

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues
I was laughing pretty hard when I saw this. I copied and pasted it into YouTube so I could listen to it and make fun of it, but wow. It made me feel kinda bad.

does it make you feel bad because it's a well written song or because the song is so bad you feel ashamed to laugh at it

i'd listen to it but i'm in the middle of another album right now
But anyway...
I'm not sure if it's exactly what you'd enjoy. Musically, it's typical, well produced musically, newer punk. Drumming is fantastic. Lyrically it's very raw and emotional though, and you can see that Laura put a lot of herself in to writing it. Rather than a political statement it's a personal one.
It's kind of a concept album, loosely following a story of a transexual prostitute who speculatively (depends on who you ask. I don't think it was ever officially stated) may or may not kill herself in the second to last track, leaving the final track as a personal reflection from Laura on the story in conjunction to her own emotional life events. That's the way it makes the most sense to me.

being sort of a nin newb, i can hand pick a few songs for you, if you'd like

i'll try to ease you into what reznor's like. it can be daunting if you just jump into something like starfuckers inc.

Yeah, actually. Trent was signed to TVT Records at the time--which he hated, because after PHM went quadruple platinum, TVT started pressuring Trent harder than ever to make a followup album faster than he was willing to create one.

They also commissioned him to compose something more pop-oriented, when Trent wanted to start taking the project in a more hard rock direction. He made the loud and aggressive Broken EP as a result, in secret, without clearance from his label or anything.

During this period, he did a couple of cover tracks: "Physical" (originally by Adam Ant) and "Suck" (originally by Pigface--a band to which Trent himself is an ex-member). Cool covers, but Trent didn't feel like they fit in well enough with the EP, so he initially planned on releasing them separately as a 12".

TVT wouldn't let him, though--so instead, he came up with the idea of packaging a 3" with the two songs along with the EP itself, which TVT could only afford to do for the first 250,000 copies--those little discs are very expensive to make, apparently. So, for the rest of the copies of Broken, Trent just said fuck it--include them on the EP, but put a fuckload of silent tracks in between.

He simply didn't think the two songs fit the rest of the EP, and in his own words, he did everything he could to make the tracks as obscure as possible.

Those 3" discs are probably extremely valuable--I don't happen to own any.

There's an easter egg in "Physical." If you listen closely at the beginning, you can hear Trent whisper, "Eat your heart out, Steve." He's referring to Steve Gottlieb, who was the manager of TVT Records at the time--and purportedly the individual who initially tried to restrict his creative freedom with this EP.

Alright let's begin the session. I'm going to ask you a series of questions. Answer as honestly as you can.

Question 1: Why do you try to emulate the black demographic in your words, actions, your overall demeanor?

Wonder how much they go for. Was there ever an official name given for them?

here you go

i tried to play it safe at the beginning, but it gets a little more edgy as you reach the end. if you don't like a song, skip it, but i'd recommend listening until halfway and at least listening to them all once.

and if you get to the end and want more, I have some more stuff you might like.
