It's really weird that we can have total solar eclipses. The moon and the sun are exactly proportioned so that in our sky they are exactly as large as each other - the moon is 40x smaller than the sun but ut's 40x closer. If the moon orbited further away from Earth or orbited further away from the sun or either body were larger you wouldn't get these things.

your eyes will still be fucked, it won't help you. They're for the glare the sun gives off on other surfaces mostly, not the sun itself.

He's not wrong, he's right. Just because it's not burning doesn't mean it won't harm you. As long as there is a sliver of the sun visible, it WILL damage your eyes.

Put your phone on selfie mode and watch it, it'll protect them.
