But nonstop action is not always a good thing. I like character development and story as well.

Hmmm, they don't have much of that, sorry. But they do have a lot of fight scenes. :)

Why aren't gladiators a thing?

We have sports where people bash each other to a pulp. Even sports like football manages to give the players brain damage from the repetitive hitting.

Well you could look at athletes as gladiators. Putting their bodies on the line for entertainment. =/
