I'd say that's a severe case of Weabooism. Japanese plus love for anime equals severe weabooism.

But nothing has changed writing wise. The animation and sound quality just improved. Nostalgia is blinding you. There's been a lot of good stuff released in the last ten years (and just as much shit as there was before).
