Yeah, that's the point. The song is from the point of view of an old Spanish woman who's recollecting her memories of a civil war that her lover (Fernando) fought in. Back then he was brave and charming, but in the present day, he's just an alcoholic, washed-up old man. It's her longing for the time when she actually loved him.
