I am so confused. Is this canon? If so, from what?

Its from the novel "New Blood", and yes, it's canon.

Unfortunately.
Why? Why would she kill him? What the hell is going on with Halo's canon?
Because she was an Insurrectionist. Why wouldn't she kill him?
Wait? I thought someone said Palmer killed him. Who killed him exactly?

From what I can gather, Mickey refused to shoot an insurrectionist which caused the Rookie to be killed.

Is this correct?

Is this correct?

Yes, which is rather bizarre since he could mow through the Covenant with no problem.

That's bullshit.

that He never had the opportunity to kill a human, I can believe that.
But ODSTs have been engaging Insurrectionists for decades. He should have been able to make that judgement.

Of course, Since 343 is done crucifying Halsey, I guess they have to make Innies sympathetic.
Disgusting.

Species shouldn't matter. ODSTs are supposed to be the greatest infantry force in the UNSC (that aren't superhuman). Getting people into the mindset that they're killing 'the enemy' instead of killing 'a person' is already a huge part of military training - I'd imagine it'd be even more so in the super-duper-ultra-mega-best-of-the-best-of-the-best special forces the ODSTs are meant to be.

How is it bullshit? He was born during the fucking Human/Covenant War.
Unless he took up a hobby of killing humans in his off duty hours, the chances of Mickey having to kill a human is next to none.

They're not making Innies sympathetic. They're putting a character who's never killed a human before in a situation he's completely new to.

If all you've known is to kill aliens, then you're going to be conflicted on killing a human.
It's not all that odd of a thing to happen, because it's just how we work.

I can't imagine killing a human who is part of a group he's been told from birth were the enemy, and who happens to be pointing a gun at a close friend, would be much more difficult than killing an alien.

He's an ODST, he was ordered to kill her, so that's what he should have done. Suddenly pussing out and ignoring a direct order when an ally is in danger is the exact opposite of their past characterization.

We should also note that Rookie himself has had experiences with humans killed by other humans(Dirt), and may or may not have killed a human.(police officer working for kingsley)

the insurrection, while being in the background during the war was still a thing. "Rookie" was picked to join Buck's team because of his experience. If Rookie was a greenhorn in some loose sense, then by rights its safe to assume that Buck, and his team have seen some shit previously no?

It's not all that odd of a thing to happen, because it's just how we work.

In real life, soldiers who've never killed anything before are able to kill another human being when ordered to. It's what they're trained to do, after all, and I can't imagine ODSTs wouldn't be trained to fight rebels as well as the Covenant. It makes little sense that Mickey could get through the war with the Covenant with no problems and yet break down when ordered to kill one Insurrectionist.

I know you really like 343's story, but this is definitely an example of poor writing.

Oh fuck off.
I understand military conduct perfectly fine.

How many times do I need to repeat myself?
He's never killed a human. Having a lapse in judgement isn't something that's completely out there, you know.
He's not an indoctrinated Spartan that lacks humanity.

As much as you lot love to hate them, 343 aren't to blame for how a human works.

It doesn't matter if he's told to kill a human by people if all he's known is killing Aliens.

Did he fuck up? Undoubtedly. He fucked up massively.
Is what happened ridiculous? Not at all.

But whatever. I'm done here.

He's never killed a human.

Considering almost every soldier that's ever killed another in war did it when ordered without ever killing somebody before, I'm astonished that you think this matters. Especially since he's a hardcore special forces ODST and not some novice that just got out of basic.

As much as you lot love to hate them, 343 aren't to blame for how a human works.

They are, however, to blame for how their characters work. Having a sudden moment of empathy when somebody is pointing a gun at their friend isn't something that ODSTs are characterized as doing.

It doesn't matter if he's told to kill a human by people if all he's known is killing Aliens.

It doesn't matter that he's an ODST that's been trained to kill anything he's told to kill.

It doesn't matter that soldiers are taught to depersonalize their adversaries into being 'the enemy'.

It doesn't matter that soldiers have always been expected/able to kill 'the enemy' when ordered to in the past.

It doesn't matter that the Insurrectionist had his friend at gunpoint.

It doesn't matter that psychological issues more often than not occur after one has killed another, and not before.

Sorry Lemon, it still doesn't hold up.

Both of his parents were Insurrectionist btw. You know, something that actually explains why he'd have a judgement lapse.

Oh, goody, I can copy/paste my post here, too.

...And? After being told the Insurrectionists are 'the enemy' for years, and presumably being specifically trained to kill them alongside the Covenant, and considering she had a gun to his friend's head, I can't imagine this would matter to him much, especially in such a tense moment with that last detail.

If nothing else, he should have at least fired for the sake of his friend, instead of hanging back like he's trying to let her kill Rook.

And it became canon. Thanks a lot writer. You actually made it impossible now to have an ODST 2 taking the role of The Rookie again. You killed a silent protagonist off for no real reason and now I'm not gonna be able to enjoy playing ODST anymore thanks to knowing this news. What's next? Master Chief gets his ass owned by The Didact?

Fucking A. Why couldn't the rookie earn a promotion first before killing him off at least?

God dammit man.

No, fuck you MS. Fuck you writers. I don't consider the rookie's death canon. This could have been prevented easily. Where as everyone else listed in the OP were real people.

Fictional Characters can live forever!

Spoiler
Besides, isn't the rookie suppose to actually be us the player? So this douche killed all of us in the ODST Universe.

I'm not particularly upset with the Rookie dying as a concept, it's just unbelievable how he died.

God damn ungrateful Innie scum.
Where were they when UNSC Personnel were dying by the millions just so a few more civilian transports could evac off a planet?

Stealing nukes from Fleetcom, no doubt.

Why is he still 'Rookie'? The guy survived New Mombasa on his own, brought his squad together, and provided the most valuable source of information they ever had.

Still ridiculous to kill him off, let alone outside of a game.

He was new to the squad, so they called him rookie. Obviously he's a badass since he's an ODST, and Dare even comments on how odd it is that he's called a 'rookie' when he's arguably the most competent of the squad when he meets her in the tunnels, but he's still the newest member of the squad.
