This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
So Verb, given your... okay? (and I totally feel you on if you hadn't seen Black Swan alredy it would be a more enjoyable experience) consideration of Perfect Blue, something I think it was I that recommended to you, would you consider expediting somewhere towards the top of your list what I consider to be one of my favorite animated films from before the new millennium?
Jin-Roh: the Wolf Brigade
quick summery from wikipedia
Quote
The film follows Kazuki Fuse, a member of a special police unit during the alternate history 1950s Japanese riots. Failing to follow an order to execute a frightened young girl only to see her commit suicide by detonating an improvised explosive device before his very eyes, Kazuki is put on trial and sent back to the training camp for re-evaluation. Visiting the grave of the suicide, he meets Kei, the girl's sister, who doesn't hold Kazuki responsible for her demise. The film proceeds as the two develop a peculiar relationship.
Other than "it's sort of a long movie" I'd be quite interested in hearing criticisms of the film from someone like yourself.

Though I don't think the criticisms will be particularly interesting without explanation, I'm potentially interested in this too. Fellow Jin Roh fan reporting in.

I think Berserk takes itself too seriously to be unintentionally comedic... most of the time

It's a story about a grizzled, chiseled dude out for revenge, killing demons with a giant sword steeped in his hatred and the residual enmity of his fallen foes (of which there are many, mind you).

I don't know dude. The clang sound effect alone is enough to derail the series as is, and when they spammed it every two seconds in Gut's fight with Zodd in the new season I literaly could not stop laughing. And that does not even scratch the surface of the show's problems.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Did you AT LEAST like Motoko as a character verb?

I was doing a watch-through of it with a friend just shitting on it. I think RWBY is more fun to mock, but SAO's pretty entertaining in that way too.

Grave of the Fireflies - I am so fucking bitter that, in my eight years of hating all Japanese media, not a single person has ever thought to recommend me this film. Not one. My stipulations have been made loud and clear, yet nobody has ever thought that I would enjoy this movie as much as I did. I had to go and find it all by myself in this sea of shit. Thanks, fuckheads. Either way, this is my new favorite anime, and the second anime that I've ever actually enjoyed. Given its setting and subject matter, it's honestly pretty hard to dislike. Don't think I'm a weeb just yet, though. For every anime I hate, I want to see at least one thing that I love. So far, we're pretty deep in the hole. That said, this movie was great, and it feels pretty liberating to say that. Don't count on it happening again, though. 8/10

I don't have a lot to say about the big four, unsurprisingly, so let me just get these out of the way:

Dragon Ball Z (Season 1) - 4/10

Bleach (stopped @ ep9) - 2/10

One Piece (stopped @ ep4) - 3/10

Naruto (Season 1) - Unfortunately, my favorite fight wasn't even in this season, so this was a complete and utter slog. I probably forgive this show the most when it comes to the big four, because it has a lot of things I kinda like--it has a sense of humor (albeit stupid and occasionally perverted), likable characters with a lot of color and personality, and an interesting setting. We all know what bogs it down, though, but I felt like giving it some credit either way. 4/10

I have Eva, Code Geass, Attack on Titan, and Death Note queued up next + any movies I can watch in between. I expect to have a lot more to say about all of these things, so no more blank ratings from now on.

I'm pretty sure I recommended Grave of the Fireflies. I recommend it to everybody, especially people that dislike anime.

Either way, many of us here have shilled for Studio Ghibli, so you should've watched all those movies first.
For some reason I'm also vaguely remembering that recommendation.

I can understand why Verb didn't watch it sooner though. For someone who isn't enthralled by the ghibli style wading through 20+ movies would seem like a chore.

Death Note is pretty good until halfway through. When the show radically changes course, just do yourself a favor and stop watching.

I think you'll really like its main character.
