Dude.
It's Star Wars.
*casually looks at Leia*
Damsel in distress. Not the best female represenation.
No, she was a princess that was captured by an overwhelming force. While being in distress, she needed the help of friends, but as the movies progress it is realized that she is able to handle herself as well.

And then she gets captured again by Jabba, and subsequently gets used as his sexual plaything.

She's a damsel in distress with light tones of Ms. Fanservice. That doesn't necessarily mean "bad character"--just not a good example of a strong female character, like Furiosa from Mad Max.

Jabba, who would proceed to be strangled by said woman.

Leading up to her subsequently strangling Jabba to death, and later helps lead an infiltration force on Endor.

She is a pretty strong female lead.  It's not like she let's herself get captured and wail about not having someone to protect her.

She's also aggressively sassy towards her captors, not giving them any satisfaction of seeing her discomfort  (unless it's convenient, such as Vader's truth serum/torture and "Plan B" of the Rescue Han plan.)

Is she the damseliest damsel there ever was? No, but that doesn't really change anything for me.

There are stronger examples of female characters out there.

So female characters should never be captured?

Considering the trope is done to death, yeah, I'd prefer it if the damsel in distress was never employed ever again, until it's no longer a tired cliche that demeans women.

I don't think you understand what Star Wars did to that trope. When you have a damsel in distress, you expect to find a helpless woman stuck in a tower, by the big bad guy who will keep her imprisoned. Once you find that woman, you realize that the hero must protect her along the way. But it wasn't anything like that. It was far from that.
Leia was found in the big bad tower, after being tortured by the BBG. She was then held hostage, and upon being freed, after who knows how long of a torture, she became willful enough to find her way out as well. Star Wars basically said, "Even though you're strong, there are some things you can't do alone, and you need to work with a team in order to get it done." When they were stuck in the prison, she was the one who shot out the hole and let them into the garbage chute. She said, “Well somebody has to save our skins.”

Yes, she was a princess, but she was a bad ass warrior princess. Did you not hear that sassy ass tone she had in the beginning of the film as well?
"Princess Leia:Governor Tarkin, I should have expected to find you holding Vader’s leash. I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board.
Governor Tarkin:Charming to the last. You don’t know how hard I found it, signing the order to terminate your life.
Princess Leia: I’m surprised that you had the courage to take the responsibility yourself.
Governor Tarkin:Princess Leia, before your execution, I’d like you to join me for a ceremony that will make this battle station operational. No star system will dare oppose the Emperor now.
Princess Leia: The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."

She was tortured, yet she stayed strong enough to never release or betray her friends. Hell, even upon being threatened with the destruction of her home planet, she fought on.

She gets captured, yeah, shit happens. So was Han, he was nothing more than something to look at. Eye candy. A trophy, but nobody cares. But she ends up being the one who does an action that either ends up saving their asses or kills a BBG [Jabba the Hutt]. To be honest, Leia is someone torn between being a strong icon and eye candy for horny men. But to be honest? I think it's because she's stuck in a world WITH sexist people. People who believe that women are nothing but sex objects. But nevertheless she proves to the people around her AND to the audience that she can be both sexy, mature, and kick ass.

So fuck your feminist mindset. Let's be real.
