Septagon v3 update thread (the new one)

Hey y'all. While the new site is NOWHERE near ready to show off, it's reaching a point where I have a majority of the user account stuff actually working (both front and back). Because of this, I do anticipate getting to the invitation system in the next few weeks.

The invite system is new and is essentially a guard against bots / bad actors by requiring an existing user to vouch for a new user via an invitation (tied to email). Everyone here will be invited and will be given a unique "Original" role that nobody else that registers on the new site once it launches will get. Y'all are gonna be special.

But the invitations work via a whitelist / allowlist of emails:

I'll likely be making the alpha version of the site live sometime in January (basically a site launch with bugs and incomplete features). If you'd like an invite, PM me your email address.

Oooh. I mean yes and no. You don't see it, but we do get lots of spam bots in here. This will cut down on that a lot. It's also a way to self-moderate I'd like to try. Way easier to make sure people are friendly if you can incentivize good behavior with invitation rewards and punish bad actors with revoking invitation creation / demotion.

Invitations won't be rare. I plan to have everyone's inventory auto-refresh weekly up to like a cap of 3-5. If it ends up sucking / not working I can walk it back.

Unfortunately I'm hopelessly addicted to Destiny 2, so I can post there, yes. I may make a thread or something once the site has all the basic functions working.

I have Auth 100% sorted, barring any bugs, and page editing is working (and markdown rendering is sorted) but still need to start on threads and posts.

Coups were not implemented with this version of Sep7agon or the new one. . I know it would add alot more work for cheat.

It will NOT be implemented right at the start, because I'm prioritizing basic features first. Coup will be part of a quest to get the item that enables it for you. You can use that item to control:

- Role (badge next to your name)
- Rank / prefix (appears under your name)
- Accent color (color of your nameplate)
- Accent color glow (true / false) (surrounds entire post in your color)
- Nameplate (uploaded file)
- Post text color

Coup will not let you execute your own CSS. It's more like inserting overriding values if that makes sense (it's safer). The item will have a switch that will turn the feature on and off for you. When off, you won't see anyone's Coup settings or your own, but users who have theirs on will still see your values (if that makes sense).

Obviously there will be rules about not impersonating staff, etc.

A big reason I'm building v3 from the ground up is so I have the freedom to do all these cool things that SMF would make difficult. Some of the plans I have are (eventually) built in game mechanics into threads (dice roll, coin flip, etc.) for RPG / DnD type shit.

I could see cards that are tradable being a thing. I want the community to use what I make, so the more stuff that people want to use and interact with the better.

Quick update cuz I know it's been a sec:

I've finished:
1. Thread / post system, including reply, edit, like, etc.
2. Base inventory system (items are at least available and can be used)
3. Permissions system
4. Invite system (uses inventory system)

Most of the critical functions of the site are complete. I think the things I have to do before making v3 live in an alpha / MVP state are:

1. Post deletion ability
2. Rank-up function (EXP is tracked but I haven't built the listener)
3. PM system (prob the biggest hurtle as I've not started).
4. Front page (likely will just launch with a static homepage)
5. Alerts and linking to alerted posts / threads
6. Moderation tools (at least starting to build them)

Post launch I'd handle:
1. Nameplate system
2. Coup / custom themes
3. Poll support / filtering support for threads
4. Saved threads and profile options like tracking liked posts, etc.
5. Groups and the donation system for supporting the site
6. Anon support for posting without your name.
7. Quests / credit / trading system for items.

Oh also: you don't need to worry about getting your email up to date. I modified the invite system temporarily so that any invites coming from my account will tag you as an "Original" Septagon member. I can send invites out manually once the site is up (which will be alongside this one while we're building features and testing).
