The ruler prior to Castro planned the military coup in which he came to power on US soil, and was granted a great deal of US aid and military support over the course of his reign. In fact, Batista was running for president before his coup, but threw democracy out the window and took power by force.

Castro and his lieutenants asked the US to help reinstate an election based system, but the US would rather support a dictator and milk Cuba for resources, so a rebellion was staged.
