But it’s time now for all the laughter to die in outrage. Because we need to state in the clearest and most unambiguous terms what is happening in America in November 2020: The president of the United States is using the power of his office to try to overturn, by any means necessary, the fair and democratic election that will remove him from office. In a nation that stakes its claim to “exceptionalism” on 44 peaceful transfers of power (despite one that wasn’t) over 231 years, its current leader is attempting a coup.

It’s not a joke. It’s a crime. And there ought to be consequences — for Trump and his enablers, and to ensure this never happens again.

The president, the Republican Party, and some of its key elected officials crossed a line last week when they went from frivolous courtroom challenges and insistent recount demands — annoying and antidemocratic, but legal — to demanding that election canvassers and state legislatures ignore legal vote counts, untainted by any evidence of fraud, and simply award unearned electors to Trump.

Don't move this to Serious. It's not a political issue, it's a crisis that's unprecedented in the history of our country. The last thing anything of this magnitude happened was the Civil War. We're living in crazy fucking history, this is bigger of a crisis than 9/11. We've faced foreign threats many times - this is a murky, internal one.

Demanding that state electors literally ignore the results of the election is not legal. Calling Trump a traitor isn't overblowing anything.

Not that we had high expectations for Trump, but his staff and the GOP (that know what he’s doing is wrong) continue to enable him as he continues to do nothing but divide the nation.

And I’m sure they’ll all benefit from it career-wise.

This is assuming he knows what he is doing. Big assumption.

He certainly knows what he’s doing in terms of constantly victimizing himself, peddling unfounded conspiracy theories/misinformation, and punishing any dissent among his followers.

In terms of the consequences of his actions: possibly not, but I doubt he cares either way.

He will leave office.
