Also, condemning an entire military for the actions of the SS and LW ground forces. the WH was always the least "Nazi" German outfit from the beginning, though that did change towards the later half of Barbarosa and the retreating Ostfront, as more and more men from all over were simply taken in to the SS Battalions as they grew in prominence. War crimes were mostly early war though, as it's hard to round up a whole village of Ukrainians when you're retreating instead of advancing. By the fall of '44, the SS presence in the West was largely disillusioned boys who hated the regime and simply wanted to keep their family safe from the horrors of the advancing Red army.

But the craziest shit is that the LW (pilots being the usual exception, as they seem to mirror the submariners in historical accounts (Das Boot's line "We are ordered to sink ships where we find them. You can ask the men who started this war about the rest..." is a commonly reflected sentiment throughout the Kriegsmarine)) was more fanatical Nazi than the SS. Check some of the writings from LW Pz divs. Adolf was of the mind that he had (loosely quoting) "...a reactionary Army, a christian Navy, and a National Socialist Air Force!"

If Das or I thought the US evil, we wouldn't have volunteered to defend her against enemies both foreign and domestic. But there are stains on that flag and we don't deny them. Our history is proud, but there are flaws.

Look at it this way, have you fucked up in your life? Probably. Do you deny it and tell yourself that you're awesome and always have been awesome? Probably not. Your mistakes guide you to not repeating them. Why would our national story be any different? Crimes were committed by our ancestors. Can they ever be atoned for? More than likely not. But the drive to never repeat them can be recognized.

One type of weapon used during sieges was lunching bodies of victims who died off something like smallpox over the walls. We may not have known about what germs were, but we sure did know what disease's are good enough to use them as weapons.
