I wish more people would combine violins and classical instruments with rock like this band. Or this, for a more well known band.

I love listening to those kind of combinations of intruments you don't really see in most music now. I guess it's because I enjoy listening to soundtracks, so a lot of that kind of stuff has started influencing my taste in 'regular' music, too.
First song: I like this. Very ethereal, and the explosion towards the end is well-executed. The vocals sound great all throughout, and the visuals really helped. Not really something I'd care to give multiple listens, but I thought it was good.

Second song: I like Muse. This is another good song, but I prefer some of their other songs, like Uprising and Knights of Cydonia.

If you like violins in tandem with rock music, I'd recommend checking out Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Here's the first song. Good stuff. 10/10 album.

If you're intimidated by the length of it, don't worry--each track is divvied up into four or five movements each. It really gives you that soundtrack feel you're talking about.

And I can't say that I like those tunes very much. When I listen to music, I either like to use it to bolster myself or I like to dissappear into it.

While that particular song stands out with all the pauses or instruments used, it's not one that incites any thoughts out of me whatsoever, and it's not one that'll bolster me in any way. I won't calm down or relax from listening to it. I won't increase my heart rate or feel like moving to it.

It reminds me of an explosion. The music's all scattered about and it jumps from one section to the next while I sit there imagining some fucking guy with a whistle as I listen to some fucking guy with a whistle. Or maybe a flute.

Not my cup of dicks.

"Exciting" was your word if I remember right; I don't think I ever used that word.

It does have a discernable pattern. Example being 1:10-3:42, it's 4/4 and a two bar pattern. Completely regular.

You're getting caught up on two things here: taking the whole as a metric, and syncopation.

Basically, the piece is a series of smaller pieces, like short stories. Instead of "reading" them individually, you're listening to them like chapters of a novel and being confused by the lack of continuity. They do have continuity-- within their own stories.

And there's also the syncopation. Syncopation is basically a note that makes a song off-beat; very popular in funk music. The only reason syncopation should make you unable to bob your head to the beat is if you're reading the time signature incorrectly. I'd recommend following the percussion, and I'd recommend watching something like this

You also asked why "freeform" is entertaining. Simply put, changing the time, phrasing, etc to improvise something on the spot is really fun. Both to play and listen to. Think of guitar solos back in the day, like Hendrix. People didn't rehearse that: they just threw a gap down in the song and said, "do what you're feeling at that moment". It's a carry over from jazz music, to break from the standard you've set to display a raw power of emotion that directly relates to who you are and what you feel. No two solos are the same, you get something new every time it happens. That's the beauty of it for the player, and the listener.
I think you did use the word exciting--but whatever, I don't know. Maybe you used a synonym.

Either way, you go on to describe musical improvisation as "really fun" here, which is pretty much in the same line of thinking--and that's what I take contention with. Because, obviously, I don't find it fun at all. Now, to be fair, you did just say that it's both fun to listen to and to play--And sure, I can concede that playing freeform music might be "fun," in the same way that a young child might think splashing around in the mud is fun. It's not exactly a useful or intellectual thing to do--and you're not really accomplishing anything but making a big mess--but sure, I guess that sort of thing can be fun, from that perspective. But fun to listen to?... That's my problem. What's fun about it? I find it infuriating, not fun.

You mentioned guitar solos, but guitar solos are always better when they're planned out. That's why I can't stand artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan--I don't get "feeling" out of their playing. I just get nonsense and long-winded pretentiousness. It's fucking boring. In general, guitar solos have always been my least favorite part of any rock song (even when they're written) simply because I find them extremely grating after awhile. I don't really find them impressive--they're annoying. Get back to playing that catchy riff, please.

In terms of my listening to the track as a whole, rather than as individual pieces or whatever--well, it's only intuitive that I'd listen to the track as a whole, isn't it? Because that's how most music is. But even if I listen to it "properly", and take all of its separate pieces into account, it still sounds like shit to my ears. It sounds like a bunch of losers trying way too hard to make some weird artistic statement, and it sounds terrible. There's just nothing redeeming about this track for me, let alone "fun."

Hmm, while I would never download the shite you posted, I wouldn't say there's no pattern. The song seems to be broken up into bits... Some of it reminds me of Tom and Jerry/cartoon transition type tunes
That's a good point, actually. I could see this type of music playing over a cartoon, or a TV show, or something. Music often needs visuals to help supplement what's going on.

But am I gonna sit down and listen to that kind of music for fun?... Fuck no.

Improvisation is the purest form of self expression. It's composition in real time, with musicians picking out compositional elements from their emotions immediately, without time to think and revise.
This makes me sad, because it sort of invalidates that entire awesome rant you did on SRV awhile back. Because you sound like your typical dumbass SRV fan, talking about "muh feelings" and other bullshit. There is nothing impressive about composing music in real time, if the music sounds like fucking shit, and it always does. Having a more concentrated, focused effort and composing a piece of music that expresses a particular emotion is way, way cooler, and a lot more difficult to do, because now you don't even have an EXCUSE to sound shitty.

And it just hit me--improvisational music is just an excuse for bad musicianship.
