Well for one, they're not physically addictive.
Secondly, they effect your body in different ways. Once again, hallucinogens give a primarily mental effect rather than a physical one - they change the way in which you think and perceive the world but do not change the chemical balance of your body. Amphetamines and opiates create physical changes in your body, thus making them much more dangerous for use.
I'm sure it's possible to permanently damage yourself with the kinds of things I've used, but once again that's where using them responsibly comes into play.
