When Americans refer to years of school as grades, or by their name like 'Sophomore Year'?

Because every time I read 'Year 7' and 'Sixth Form' and what not I am instantly alienated.

I also find it odd that their definition of Public School is the opposite of ours.

Those names are trying too hard. In Australia we just number them.

It's normal that Brits are confusing. They confuse you, then send the redcoats, colonize, and then the colonial Brits get tired of being associated with other Brits in Britain and ask for independence and then join the commonwealth, or just play it cool as if it's water under the bridge.

Was this in reference to Australia, India, or Canada?
Because we never joined the Commonwealth.

No, but the US is playing like it's cool. As if the Queen isn't planning the British takeover of the American colonies.

Just you wait. The ships of the line will eventually arrive.

They arrived hundreds of years ago, didn't end well.

In high school, Freshman-Senior years are also just called 9th-12th grade, and are normally written that way on official paperwork.
The only reason why I could possibly think they're not called years is because plenty of kids get held back, so they're not really considered years of schooling, but rather milestones.

Also, what's your definition of public school?

It is a bit weird, but I've spent enough time talking to yanks to vaguely understand their colonial gibberish.

Plus my psych textbook actually has translations of americanisms, not even kidding. There is a little chart explaining Freshman/Sophomore/GPA/other yankslang.

Everything up to sixth form is pretty straightforwards for us though, probably comparable with grade X.

Nursery
Reception
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3
(Etc)
Year 11
--End of mandatory schooling--

--Sixth Form--
Year 12 (Lower 6th)
Year 13 (Upper 6th)

--College--
For applied subjects like game design, hairdressing and bricklaying etc.

--University--
Undergraduates/Masters/Doctorates

That's roughly how it works <.<

That's a weird one really, Public Schools in the UK are the private ones which cost extortionate amounts of money to go to and are basically the breeding grounds for the next generation of politicians.

State funded schools are the public ones (Free to attend) but they don't have a proper name <.<

In britbongistan, they have Public School, and State School.
Wherein the US we call ours Public/Private, they just seem to refer to the Private sector as the Public Sector.

I could probably write a paper on how this is part of a whole illuminati scheme to oppress the people, but nah.

In the US, that's called Technical School, and it surprises me that they have it for bricklaying.

A lot of things like that are taught by Apprenticeship here, sort of an old way of doing things, but functional, nonetheless.

Well it's more construction in general but yeah, it was a little surprising <.<

I couldn't name a vocational school  here without a masonry course, dunno why it'd be any different over there.

I think syntax-wise, it'd make the most sense to blend the two: private school is owned by private entities, and state school is the government-run session.

Only other thing in Murica that doesn't make much sense to everyone else is that College and University are essentially the same thing.  You go to college at the University of Massachusetts or Amherst College, or Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to get your Bachelors/Masters/Ph.D.

(Based on what you guys are saying) college to you is technical school to us, which, where I'm from, often overlaps high school, but not always.

A college is one school body. A university is a conglomerate of bodies and therefore larger.

That's the only difference.

All of the ones I've heard of focus on electrical systems, plumbing, and of course auto-tech.

Architecture, sure, but to be a stonemason?
As far as I've seen that's a skill that's passed down from a master to an apprentice.

Yes. I have no ideawhat grade=what, and when high school or middle school or whatever sart. It's really quite confusing, as I think of high school as 11-16 years old, but America has it different
