A law introducing plain cigarette packaging in England and Wales could come into force in 2016 after ministers said MPs would be asked to vote on the plan before May's general election.

It follows a series of public consultations on the issue.

Public Health Minister Jane Ellison told MPs the move was likely to have a positive impact on public health, particularly for children.

Labour has already pledged to ban images on packets if it wins power.

And doctors say the move would save thousands of lives.

BBC health editor Hugh Pym said the changes could come into force as soon as 2016 if Parliament passes legislation before the end of March.

Ms Ellison said all the evidence pointed to the step having a positive impact - although she warned of a potential legal challenge from the cigarette industry which strongly opposes the move.

"We cannot be complacent. We all know the damage smoking does to health," she said.

"This government is completely committed to protecting children from the harm that tobacco causes."

"The colours on the packet were mesmerizing."

I mean really? The health minister Jane Ellison said there's evidence to prove it works but didn't actually provide any which is pretty pathetic. I'm sure there are many more real issues they could discuss and vote on but nope let's try and fuck with the smokers.

You'd be surprised, a lot of our current advertising means uses classical conditioning as the basis of doing so. By attaching an attractive stimulus to it, the mind can see the cigs as more alluring, you recall things like the Camel smoking commercials that tried portraying smoking as cool. Also note how movies may place cig ads within the movie in the background or has a main character who smokes. Mr. P could probably explain that shit better than me though. That being said, I do agree that forcing them to make all cig  packaging plain seems like overkill.

Sure, it might make them more alluring, but most people know the health dangers of smoking cigarettes. The packaging isn't going to play a role as much as the person's own self-interest does.

Anyone with a quarter of a brain knows that cigarettes aren't good for you. The packaging literally isn't a factor at all.

Believe it or not, smoking can take the edge off at times. I try to refrain from smoking cigs but may do it on the rare occasion. I actually just smoked my first cig in two months today, been up since 9 working on a shitload of schoolwork.

It's just there's soooo much more you can do to take the edge off of things. Yeah sure, you can smoke because it feels good, but don't give me the bollocks that we're all dying or it doesn't effect you that much.
