It's pretty much a mathematical certainty that there is other forms of life in space. However, we haven't come into contact with anything of the like, and have yet to find definitive proof of there being any sort of alien lifeforms. Do you think that it is a possibility for us to accomplish this in our generation?

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Not with human technology. I do not see us even colonizing Mars for another 200 years or so.
We'll do it a lot sooner than that, I think.

I believe we will.
Human lifespan is surely going to increase thus making it possible for a generation to have a better chance at contacing or being contacted by extraterrestrials.

I think that there's a chance that we'll discover life on a few of the other planetary bodies in our solar system. But in our generation, in terms of intelligent, space faring life? No. For starters, the distance is painfully far, and while there are likely thousands of worlds that can support life, the thing is, our universe is still young. We're in a stage were life can finally develop because of the temperature and the way things function. If any form of life existed in the early stages of the universe, it would be beyond our understanding, and maybe even beyond the physical limits of what we can see and what level of perspective we exist on.

Second, life has shown that in general, it is chaotic. It is violent, and can be aggressive. And, as a species, we are still very much primitive. If there was any space faring species out there that made it beyond their simple roots successfully, and they found us first, there are only two outcomes. The first, and I consider it the least likely, is attack. They walk all over us, take our world as theirs and regard us nothing more than simple animals, in which case, there would be nothing we could do to fight them.

The second, which makes more sense, is that if this species has come so far that they can travel the void of space, those enormous distances, then they likely have thousands, if not tens of thousands of years worth of evolution going for them. For any species to make it that far, they MUST  have evolved beyond their simple, bestial natures and primal instincts, overcame them, and set the shackles free for themselves to the stars beyond. And therefore, that means they would have understanding. They would look at as, and simply see that we haven't yet evolved far enough to overcome what chains us, and therfore, we wouldn't be ready for the responsability of what lays beyond. So their best course of action would simply be to leave us alone.

Might we discover life on other worlds? Yes. Will we contact them in our lifetime? Not a fucking snowballs chance, unless said intelligent life is extremely kind, and tinkers with evolution. And again, looking at the size of the universe around us, snowballs fucking chance.

Not with human technology. I do not see us even colonizing Mars for another 200 years or so. People are selfish and care only about money, not advancing our species.

If we were to make contact with an alien species, it would have to be because they came across our planet and initiated the contact.
We could do it in less than 50 if the guys at the top weren't so greedy and the guys at the bottom weren't so fucking docile about it.

I agree, we certainly have the means to do it. Humans can accomplish so much when working together, yet we choose to continue using every means possible to divide ourselves as a species and hate each other. It is incredibly sad to see, but the majority of people in our society seem to be content with their lazy, bullshit lives they are living.

Save the cheerleader, save the world.

Well governments have already made contact with aliens and it's up to them to publicly declassify it to the public. But it's not going to be a while till that happens due to the immaturity of the people now and a reason why aliens have not made contact with the general public

I'm a skeptic in pretty much all areas, but even I admit that with all the eyewitness sightings, photographs, interviews, etc, that it's not completely outside the realm of possibility for something to have contacted us already.

Humans will be on Mars before 2030, multiple permanent, realistic plans are in place for lunar colonisation. The next Mars rover will look to self-produce oxygen, there will be a Mars colony before 2050

Within the century, if the world works together. But that won't happen, unless someone out there miraculously takes an interest in us, or perhaps a species finds Voyager, we will have to go out and find them

I don't understand why everyone wants to go and live on planets that would cause Human populations to diverge genetically. What we should be aiming to do is build giant city ships and send them on cruises around the solar system.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Not to be pessimistic, but in my lifetime I'll doubt we'll travel further than Mars (though we might come into contact with extraterrestrial single celled organisms...maybe). Unless the aliens are willing to do the legwork and come to us in my life, I just don't think I'll be alive when it finally happens, which is both sad but also relieving somehow.

But who knows? Maybe the Voyager probe has bonked off a couple of spaceships on it's way out of the solar system. Might not exactly be the intended form of contact, but it's "contact".

It's possible. There are a few moons/planets in our solar system where simple life may flourish, or perhaps SETI will pick something up from out there, a signal from another civilization. Of course, any signal we receive may come from a civilization that's already long dead, but hey, that still counts.

But...SETI's been active for 30 years now, and we still haven't found anything. Maybe we never will, not before something bad happens to our species.
