It's the most pointless thing I've ever read and tried to be deep and philosophical but failed miserably.LOLconfirmed to not understand what the book is about. It's not trying to be philosophical in any way, Holden is the faux a intellectual one. The book solely exists as a character study. It's not trying to prove a point or push a philosophy, it's just an exploration of a character. All of Salinger's books are like that.A character study? He didn't go through any type of transformation or anything for there to study. It's not a book about someone's day to day either, so it's not a study of a character that isn't supposed to have gone through something. It's in fact very clearly categorized as a "coming of age" novel, but he doesn't really change or mature or anything. It's basically the author ranting about things and complaining about life through a character.

It's a sci fi story that explores human traits.
